What exactly did women used to carry in their handbags?!!

I'm sickly today, it's nearly midday and I'm still in PJs on the sofa, surfing the internet and I think I'm off for a sleep soon, it's just a cold but why does that make you feel like death warmed up?

ANYWAY I told you this as the above question came to me as I was laying in bed this morning, trying to psych myself up to getting up, even if it was just to put PJs on to lay on the sofa!

I was looking at my lovely vintage handbags in my bedroom thinking what a shame it is that I don't use them often and that I really should use them more often

This one is one of my favourites it's a great shape and it's a Marks and Spencer one!

It's such a lovely shape isn't it? But what the heck can you get in it?

This is the dilemma of the modern woman who loves vintage, I'm not like some who carry the kitchen sink but I do carry keys which include a card size key for my car, Blackberry, a purse/wallet which I can't avoid as not only do you need cash in this day and age, I have credit cards, store loyalty cards, my drivers license is a card along with my organ donation credentials, make up but again don't carry more than I need so my make up back isn't big, a powder compact, and essentials like a pen! I think I'm pretty good but there is no way I would get all that in this cutie! Then of course if I'm going somewhere important I like to take a camera too, so forget it!

I have a couple more that I rarely use :o( I love the colour of this bag and would love to use it more, it's a solid nice shape and a nice colour but holds so little!

Now this next one I have used more and you can tell it's a little bashed but I used to have a couple of lovely green suits so I used this with those, but really as an evening bag, still not sure I could use it during the day

I also used this next one a lot but again as an evening bag, it's also a little 'worn' and sadly has one brass nobble missing - ok I'm sick I can't think of the name ha ha!

Now last but certainly not least is a bag that I CAN use in these modern times, I love it! It's stylish and big!!

So what do you think women used to carry? I imagine the following, their door key, cash, powder compact and lipstick! Ah life was much simpler wasn't it eh?!!

awwww sweeite, I hope you are feeling better soon! It's no fun to be sick =(

Love the purses, I used to have more modern bags that were so small and cute, but I never used them because they didn't hold anything!

I think women had purses for daytime and then evening bags. I suppose for evening they held lipstick, powder, gloves (?) and a hankie. I don't think they needed much else!

Keys, Bank card, mobile phone and red lipstick. I could cross the world with these 4 essentials.
I always surprised my friends with tiny purses.

Ps : little french astuce : 2 glasses of red wine before go to sleep. There is good thing inside against cold ;) (magnesium)

oooh thanks for that, so interesting although those bags are all pretty big, mmm I like Greer Garson's, that's my size of bag, wonder what she used the knife with 5 blades for ha ha!

ah so you do the small bag regularly eh? I struggle with this!

Thanks for the advise but sadly I am very un-french I don't much like red wine, I like white wine but not red so much!

Hey! Thanks for following my blog :)
I switch bags depending on where I am going and what I am doing. But I suffer with the smallness of lovely vintage bags - and so - invariably, they become "going out" bags. However, that does not stop me purchasing impractical but adorable arm candy!

Keys, wallet, phone, ipod, notepad, pens, tissues, compact, lipstick, aqueous cream, whatever book I'm currently reading or my DS, feminine essentials, pillbox, water bottle, nuts or small bar to eat.. gee it's a wonder I don't already have back problems! I can barely fit it all into my modern, chunky handbag!

I'm still poorly too! I've pretty much been in PJs for a week feeling sorry for myself!

I always think that about handbags, I do have one nice chunky spacious one, but so many look so stuffed full by the time I've even got my purse in, let alone a mobile, compact, lipstick, keys and all the rest!

Ooooh! Love that green one! I was wondering the same thing recently when I'd pulled out a vintage purse and found that if my keys were in it nothing else would fit. I guess they didn't have giant wallets and the lipsticks were smaller

I suspect it was easy to do the small bag because they weren't going to work. I have to carry my lunch, a book for the tube, phone, make-up, paperwork, diary... if I wasn't working I could easily just have a credit card, lippy and mobile and be set to go!

My guess is a compact, a lippy, keys and some loose change. On work days I carry those as well as my diary, lunch box, mobile, i-pod, work keys, work ID, purse,Polos, current paperback, notebook, bar of choccie, small sketch pad, a pencil case, tissues, and Nurofen...I need them to counteract the back pain I get from lugging all this about!
Get well soon.xxx

Today, at work, I have a smallish lucite purse. I carry my lipstick, compact, drivers licence, credit card, cash, phone, cigarettes, lighter, and keys. I think it's the wallet that takes so much room, so I just bring my ID, card and cash loose in the smaller purses.

I have been using a diaper bag for so long, (actually just a large purse) but when Mav and I go out without the children I hand him my ID and lipstick. I carry nothing and love it!

Sorry to hear your feeling so awful, apple cider vinegar in black tea with honey always helps me when i'm sick.
What a lovely collection of bags you have!If i have my kids with me i use a more modern bag but if it's just me & hubby i'll take one of my vintage ones. This is what i fit into my medium sized envelope style bag-house keys, car keys, lip balm, lipstick, mini handcream, pen, mini notepad, sml crocheted purse with my cash & cards, mobile phone. It's definitely a squeeze though & i have actually been looking at those sweet basket style purses as an alternative so i can carry more things easily. There are some lovely ones on etsy:) Hope you feel better soon. xxx
