My Hair Setting invention!

I've been setting my hair for many years now but one thing I've never been able to do is sleep in curlers. I have very thick hair and need a lot of curlers so it is just too darned uncomfortable for me to sleep in them, they just stick in my head and I don't get any sleep at all.

Of course I have options, I have heated rollers and if I want to set my hair without heated rollers I need to spend the day in curlers, however if I need my hair setting in the morning it would be really good if I could sleep in curlers. So what to do....

Well I was standing in the queue at Tesco the other day and I spotted some cheap sponge curlers 3 packs for £3, and I suddenly had a brainwave, so I'm sharing it with you!

These are the curlers.

I removed all the plastic bits and then cut up some fabric, and wound the piece of fabric round the middle plastic bit that originally went through the curler.

Then start to push the fabric through the curler.

All the way through until it looks like this

Eventually you'll end up with some looking like this

The advantage of them is that they are like curlers without the hard bit and have more substance that just using rags, which I have done in the past but again as I have thick hair it's harder to do, whereas with the curler it just makes it much easier.

Here are a couple of pictures of me with them in

I must confess I wasn't sure if they would work, I was perfectly comfortable in them and would have slept very soundly had my husband not snored like a walrus through the night!

So now the big reveal did they work? Well this is me having just removed them

And once brushed and styled, YES a success, I'll definitely be using them again, I don't need to set my hair every night I'm lucky that way but I now have a method that I can use overnight to sleep in. I'm pretty pleased with myself!

I'd love to know if anyone is interested in using this. It's really worked for me. Of course I set it dry as you can see, I've never been able to set my hair wet or even damp, it just doesn't dry, so dry set all the way for me.

CLEVER!!!!!!!
Genius. I can't sleep in rollers and sponge ones leave a kink from the plastic. I am SO going to use this idea.

Brilliant! This is nothing short of amazing! I am so trying this this weekend. Thanks so much for sharing! This is a perfect solution for me because I never have time to curl in the mornings (can't get myself out of bed early enough). I have also tried sleeping in the sponge rollers but they are definitely uncomfortable. I'm so excited!

Did you put any setting lotion or products in your hair prior to rolling? Thanks again!

A brilliant solution! I HATED those curlers when I was a kid - no wonder we all looked so awful on picture day at school, we were tired from trying to sleep on curlers and our heads hurt!

Bloody genius! Now why couldn't you have thought of that last month before I finally caved in and bought myself some hot sticks! lol

Fiona, this is brilliant!! I've never tried rag rollers though I haven't had much success with pillow rollers (kind of the same concept but a wire in them and foam, except the foams are squarish for some weird reason). I don't have super thick hair but I think I have a lot of fine hair, and it's so curl resistant that I have to use a ton of rollers too, so sleeping can be a bit uncomfortable.

I totally want to try this out now! I need to get more rollers as mine are starting to get all shredded and gross, so maybe I'll get 2 sets and try this out! (Well, once we move and I have access to my fabric again!)

What a brilliant idea. Those sponge curlers were the only thing that ever worked on my poker straight hair as a child and I'd love to try them out again.
Your hair looks fab. xxx

Interesting method, looks like a cross between rag curlers and sponge rollers. I use those exact foam pink rollers to set my hair and I hate how my hair gets caught in the plastic part. I'll have to try your method of using fabric instead to hold them to the hair.

You, my dear, are a genius! I use the foam rollers with wire through them, so they are a bit better than the plastic posts, but this is SO much better. AND it looks more period, like rag rolls. Thanks for the tip!

Oooo, I might have to try this - very good thinking. I have never slept in these thing over night, only with kirby grips from pin curling, so I imagine the is loads more comforable. Thanks for sharing.

Oh finally! Something I might be able to use! You say you set it dry: what do you mean? Do you spritz setting lotion onto dry hair before curling? I have tried to wet set but I have thick, long hair & it just doesn't dry in rollers.

Straight Talking Mama! said...

Hey there, yes I spritz setting lotion on dry hair I have never ever been able to wet set my hair because of my thick hair either. I've been dry setting for years, it works :o)

Oh my! I use those rollers in my hair and I hate sleeping on my side with them. I took the rod out and stuck a pin through them once my hair was rolled up, but it would still annoy me. This idea is genious! It looks like you have give alot of ladies a much more comfortable nights rest :)

Pure genius! Cannot wait to try this. Thanks for sharing.

What a great idea! I actually have sponge curlers that have wire inside and you twist them to close. They work ok, but are only one size. Those sponge rollers come in different sizes.

Tara said...

This idea is beyond brilliant!!! Removing the plastic rods and replacing them with fabric strips not only prevent dents, I bet it makes sleeping in curlers so much more comfortable! This is genius thank you, Fiona!

Andi B. Goode said...

You know, I thought of doing the exact same thing but wasn't sure if it worked. Thanks for this (& testing it out for me haha) because now I know that it will. Great minds surely do think alike, Fiona ;)

I'll definitely be trying this, I usually sleep in hard plastic rollers and it is so uncomfortable! I hate the way sponge rollers squish smaller in the middle and give a tight frizzy curl on me, but having the fabric in the middle instead of the rod I think it would work, I could still use my plastic rollers on top but put these round the back and sides to sleep on.

BethBird said...

Hey, that's a really good idea! I think I'm going to try it, since I have those kind of rollers, but hate sleeping on them. (My mom always used them on me when I was a kid.)

Only just seen this blog! That's a great idea, might do that myself. Your hair always looks lovely. :D xx

That looks worth a try, I am so hopeless at doing my hair. Today my attempt at a "vintage do" was more "ratty birdsnest". I am going to look for these - thanks!

This is a great idea. I picked up a cheap pack of those plastic sponge rollers but the plastic frames kept popping apart and I ended up with dents in my hair. Will definitely try this!

What a brilliant idea! Why has no one thought of this before? GENIUS! xx

Thats really great! i will try this TONIGHT!!! so excited. I love pin curls but its great to change things up a bit and the plastic things just dont hold.
Thank you so much for sharing this!!!!

Your idea gave me an idea. Instead of using cloth as ties I'm going to use pipe cleaners inside the foam. Think I will get a good nights sleep and curly hair to boot. Thanks for the kick start.

Genius!!! I am giving this a try tonight!!! I always have issues with the plastic parts leaving dents in my curls!! Thank you soooo much!!

Boyett-Brinkley said...

haven't used curlers in forever but have been thinking of revisiting them. Of course, being able to sleep on them at night would be preferable but since I spent most of my teenage years with my head hanging practically off the bed, I would like to do something different. Thought about these spongy rollers -- saw them recently at a store -- but I never liked the little dents that the hard parts made -- this looks like a good solution! I think I will try! Clever!

Thank you. My 79 year old mother in law just had a stroke. She's recovering but her long fine hair is a challenge. I can set it to keep it from tangling at night, and gussy her up in the morning. Thank you so much. LP
